The region of Margate, nicknamed the 'Garden of England' because of its green landscapes, where apple trees and cherry trees are plentiful, is one of most beautiful areas of the country, with one of the softest climate. The city, facing the sea, is located in a pretty countryside in the south-east coast of England. It is a very pleasant place with golden sand beaches and a cordial atmosphere. Barely 110 kilometres from London, Margate was during many years an oasis of peace and quietness for the inhabitants of the capital. The old town, with its splendid port, gives us the possibility to imagine, how the life in the town around the 17th and 18th centuries was. Margate also offers many shops, bars and restaurants, museums, theatres, cinemas, discotheques, casino, an amusement park, and many cultural, sports and leisure activities. The famous Leeds castle is not far from there, approximately 60 km away; the historic 1000 year old cathedral of Canterbury is 25 km and the medieval town of Sandwich approximately 12 km. In a few words, you will not get bored. With its human-sized dimensions and its pleasant and sympathetic surroundings, Margate is an ideal destination to study English in England while making the most of the sea and of an exceptional landscape. A small anecdote: here was born Thomas Barber who invented and built, 1736, the first bathtub!
